H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday 15th March 2020 ordered the closure of schools to curb the spread of Coronavirus. This was a welcome initiative, but parents on Monday realized just how underprepared they were to have their kids at home. With some employers allowing parents to work from home, life at home is one broken toy away from pure chaos!
Before you pull out all of your hair, here are some tips to ensure that you handle homeschooling like a pro:
1. Have a schedule
The same way they have one at school, it is your duty to prepare one for the kids now that they will be learning from home. Remember, this is not a holiday and we should still ensure that our kids are keeping busy so that when they do go back to school, they won’t be lost.
Ensure that the schedule is well balanced. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Include screen time, playtime, chore time and activity time.
2. Introduce a variety of fun indoor activities
If you live in an apartment area where all the kids play together outside, it may be difficult to control the possibility of contamination. Social distancing may be the best option for you and the kids. We all know how boring home can get without a multitude of friends so it’s time to seek uncle Google’s help. Look for fun age-appropriate activities that you can do at home with the kids. Stock up on legos, puzzles, play-doh… Go all out!
3. Talk about the virus openly
Your children know what’s going on so trying to keep the information from them will only give them cause to panic. Explain to them the importance of good hygiene and also let them know the good news- that recovery rate is much higher than the death rate so there’s no need to go into panic mode.
4. Lead by example
Wash your hands regularly and show your kids how they should wash their hands regularly. Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth with un-sanitized hands and show the kids not to do the same. Don’t panic and they won’t panic either.
5. And finally…
Relax. Keep yourself informed. There are many panic messages going around so ensure that the forwards you pay attention to are actually verified. Stick to verified sources such as the Ministry of Health KE, WHO, CDC and verified national news agencies. The last thing you want to do is spread false information from spammers whose main mission is to introduce chaos.
