Difference between regular and ringspun cotton t-shirts
We have often indicated that our t-shirts are made of ringspun cotton. You may be wondering what the difference is between ringspun cotton and regular cotton. Once you try on our ringspun tees, you will understand why we use these tees. In a simple explanation, Ringspun cotton is softer and nicer 😃
Cotton from the cotton plant is normally processed into yarns. To make regular tees, the yarns undergo different stages to make them smaller until they are ready to make the regular t-shirts we know. With ringspun t-shirts, however, the yarns go through an added stage where they are spun and twisted rapidly into a bobbin that makes them thinner. In the end, a fine-gauge yarn is achieved that is straightened to form the material used for sewing ringspun tees.
So what’s the difference between regular and ringspun cotton?
- Because of the extra stage that ringspun cotton undergoes, the yarn becomes smoother and softer than regular cotton tees
- The twisting of spun cotton makes it much stronger than regular cotton resulting in a softer and stronger material.
- The twisting and thinning process makes ringspun cotton tees lighter yet more durable.
- Regular cotton has fibers that run at right angles to each other. The ringspun cotton fibers flow in the same direction.
So what’s the best fabric?
There isn’t a direct answer to this because both t-shirt materials come in handy. If you require a t-shirt for laborious activities (eg you work in the construction field), a regular t-shirt will do the job. But if you intend to make a fashion statement and be comfortable, then ringspun will be a good option. If you’re thinking of getting starting your own fashion line and representing complicated artworks on a t-shirt, then you’re safer with ringspun because regular cotton absorbs a lot of ink and the design is more likely to deteriorate over time.
In the end, it all boils down to quality over quantity. And as Rachel Zoe put it: “It’s better to have fewer things of quality than too much expendable junk.”
