Creatives Highlight: Mutua Matheka
Mutua Matheka is a brand in himself! He’s well known for his striking photography, but did you know that he’s a husband, father, and a Ford Foundation Fellow? Well, now you do 😉 In his own words, his mother placed crayons in his hands when he was 3 years old and he has never looked back. He started by drawing, then painting, sculpting and finally fell in love with the beauty hidden through the lens. He has worked with countless brands using imagery to create a narrative around a product, service, or idea. And his consistency, passion, and hard work have made him a household name.
Matheka decided to make his stunning artwork more accessible by immortalizing it in really dope tees. He partnered with Create A Tee to supply the t-shirts and embed his masterpieces onto them. To many who have purchased a Mutua Matheka tee, they are not simply buying a t-shirt but a work of art.
We decided to check up on him during this COVID lockdown and ask him three questions in three minutes:
1. What inspires you to do what you do?
I’m inspired by the need to represent myself and influence how we see each other and see Africa at Africans
2. What made you decide to channel your art into tees?
Doing tees was a decision based on making my art accessible to everyone and anyone.
3. How has COVID affected your business? And how are you coping?
When things are as complicated as what COVID is doing, you find that buying things like art and tees becomes second priority. That’s been hard. For now, I’m coping by doing an isolation art project and spending some quality time with my family.
